An easy location to call home
Home to more than 15,000 college students and 12,000 full-time residents, Boone, North Carolina is a bustling college town and international tourist destination. Located at 3,333 feet above sea level, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Northwest North Carolina,
Boone has generated a culture that the locals are proud to claim as their own. A lifestyle that is envied by those that spend their summers and free time here inspires the people that call Boone “home”. BIR is a group of restaurateurs, partnered with local and regional companies, devoted to sustaining the independent restaurant as a fixture of Boone’s culture. Our member restaurants all offer tastes and experiences found nowhere else.
BIR is here to sustain something great!
People live in the High Country for many reasons. It’s different than the rest of the Southeastern United States. This difference is precisely why Boone is a major tourist destination. Aside from Appalachian State, almost everyone, in one way or another, relies on tourism. Whether it is a long weekend from the piedmont or a 4 year vacation for a bachelors degree at App State, Boone’s business climate is connected by tourism. BIR supports the indie businesses that keep people coming back, year after year!
By homogenizing the landscape with same businesses that are seen in every other town in NC and the rest of the country, the High Country loses it’s unique identity and character. BIR has taken a stand against this homogenization. BIR exists to make sure these businesses that give Boone, Blowing Rock, and Valle Crucis it’s charm, are able to remain competitive with big budget franchises. BIR aims to get you off of the beaten path so you can find the hidden gems gems. BIR is helping set Boone apart from other potential destinations and helping just a little to strengthen our local economy.
We’re Getting Involved
All BIR member businesses are involved in every kind of community activity. As a collective, BIR belongs to the High Country Host, Boone Area Chamber of Commerce, Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce, and the American Independent Business Alliance.
We proudly sponsor many local charitable organizations and events. BIR is the co-presenter of Celebrity Serve. Celebrity Serve raises money over 3 days for a different local charity every year. In 2013, Celebrity Serve raised over $20,000 for High Country United Way.
BIR is the founder of the High Country Small Plate Crawl. This is the area’s premiere food and beverage event. In 2013 it will take place September 3-5. More information can be found at PlateCrawl.com.
Born in 2011
Founded June 2011 and Incorporated as a non-profit 501c6 organization in October of 2011. A group of concerned restaurateurs gathered at Casa Rustica to discuss the influx of chain restaurants to the area. Owners from Pepper’s, Casa Rustica, Makoto’s, Red Onion/ Tapp Room, Town Tavern, and many more were at the original meeting. It was decided that in order to be remain competitive with huge operating budgets of the national chains, Each restaurant would combine resources as well as tax deductible donations from other businesses and individuals and use them in many different ways to. BIR uses the combined resources to maintain effective marketing and educate member business owners on industry trends and other industry specific information.
The Mission of Boone Independent Restaurants is to provide unlimited support for independent food and beverage establishments in the High Country by offering access to education and marketing resources
